Modernism in Australia &#8212 A Collaborative Map

In response to the limited scope of the recent exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum “Modern Times: The Untold Story of Modernism in Australia” Dan Hill at City of Sound has orchestrated a collaborative map of modernism throughout Australia. With contributions from Dan, Rory Hyde, Martin Miles, Stuart Harrison, Andrew Maher, and ourselves, the map has quickly grown to cover much of Australia’s modern buildings, artworks, and infrastructure.

The map aims to demonstrate that an exhibition need not be confined to the interior of a museum, nor its curation to creative directors or committees. The Powerhouse did set up a Flickr Pool of relevant photographs which is a start, but an open map that draws on the (even if it is limited) resources of many distributed parties each with discrete areas of knowledge can yield rapid and comprehensive results.

You can scoot around the embedded map below, or follow this link for a more manageably sized version.

We are sure to have missed many relevant and notably modern things, so if you would like to contribute to the map, send Dan an email.

    Hi Marcus:

You’re probably already aware of this, but if not: http://www.mimoa.eu/
Same concept, but on a much expanded scale.

Matt – Yes Mimoa is awesome. And we are a long way away from their features, user base and so on…
