Jan Gehl is at it again, banalifying New York this time; creating outdoor dining areas in Times Square and of course structured bike lanes. The lasting impression I have of my visit to that city was of relentless car horns and it seems that if any city should be Gehl-proof, it ought to be New York.

What is banal about Gehl’s work? It seems to me that these are all interesting additions to Broadway and could cause a welcome change to that area of the city.

The assumption that every city can be improved by adding bike lanes and widening footpaths is banal. Gehl proposed exactly the same things here in Sydney, and in the other cities he has been engaged to ‘improve’. Attempting to make every city into Copenhagen is not in the interests of a diverse global culture.

Your initial post seems to contain romanticism of the shear density of vehicular gridlock in the city, but I don’t understand the implication that it should remain that way because that’s how it works now.
