Guardian article on the absurdity of attempting to stop people from taking photographs of buildings in public places.
Basically: none of the terrorists involved in the September 11, nor the Madrid or London bombings took photographs of their target so why are authorities so worried about people photographing buildings? Because that is what the terrorists do in the movies.

Trouble is, despite the harassment of photographers usually emanating from Police/security types, it’s pretty damn hard in that sort of situation to convince them that they are in fact exceeding their authority and the law. Either to save face or out of ignorance, I imagine it would be a low % of cases where an orforrity figure has been talked down from charging/moving on/inconveniencing some poor terrarist photographer.
I think it’s probably sensible in some situations to get prior permission, particularly when you know beforehand you want to shoot potentially ‘sensitive’ buildings. (As I type that I am acutely aware that I might also, on another day, directly contradict such advice.)Andrew Nemeth has a great article/link set : ‘NSW Photographer’s Rights – Australian street photography legal issues’
