Yes It Is True, It Is The First Time in the History of My Reading The Sydney Morning Herald Online That Architecture Has Made It To The Front Page

And of course, it concerns, Mr Black, Mr Smith, Mr Pitt on a site visit to a prototype eco house in New Orleans. The house is the winning entry in a design competition that was won by Workshop APD and features Soy Based insulation among other energy saving gear, centred around making cutting the cost of building and the ongoing running costs the house.

All worthy, all good.

However, given that housing affordability is proving to be one of the major points of debate in the upcoming Australian federal election, why does it take a celebrity in the United States to get front page coverage?

Well, aside, of course, from the fact that architecture makes for rather dull news. Maybe the RAIA needs to start hassling Russ to be our advocate…

I’ve often been annoyed by all the media attention Brad Pitt receives for his ‘architectural work’. However, maybe he is helping bring architecture to the collective consiousness.

I was in the airport just today and was flipping through magazines when I saw not one, but several architectural or architect related articles in mainstream magazines. Vanity Fair had several mentions, Martha Stewart featured an early Gehry project, Travel and Leisure had a spread on Dubai building, and of course there was a big spread in Men’s Vogue featuring Philip Johnson’s glass house.

Obviously, all of these feature where slick photographic projects… hopefully the coverage will continue and prove to be a starting point for additional discourse and debate of other pertinent architectural issues.
