I love this idea. Civilisation is an installation in the lift of the Standard Hotel in New York. As the lift ascends and descends, the video tracks along from heaven to hell. Not only is the content strikingly well done, but the idea of a video timeline being controlled by the vertical position of a lift car is inspired. Images of the installation here.

Okay. So if you are reading this through a newsreader, you may not have noticed that I have been tinkering with the layout of the site. And given my lack of web skillz and as such the need to test things out on live code, if you visited the site over the last 48hrs you may have found any number of odd things taking place. One of the difficult things about this site has always been managing the integration of the office bits and the blog content. It has always been the intention that the blog and the links to our pals are located on the front page along with our projects, and I think this iteration is more successful in this regard. Anyway, if you encounter any weirdness, let me know (it has been tested on Safari 4 and Firefox 3.5 on a mac) in the comments.

A google map of the action that takes place in the comic book series DMZ. The map has been created by Brian Wood, the author of the ongoing series that tells the stories of those living in Manhattan which is now a demilitarised zone in a future/present American civil war.

The Creative Sydney festival is well under way and so far the sessions have been very successful. It is one part of the Vivid Sydney festival that is currently engulfing Circular Quay. Alongside Creative Sydney at the MCA, there is the Luminous music festival at the Opera House curated by Brian Eno, the Smartlight Sydney light walk

I will be contributing to the “Come Together: New Creative Networks” session this Wednesday at 6pm. The panel for this session will concentrate on establishing and fostering communities of creative people, an activity that we have been participating in through this website, darch and Pecha Kucha.

Then afterwards at 8pm is the excellent sounding “Who is Changing Sydney?” Panel featuring: Eoghan Lewis and Simeon King, Dan Hill, Greg Smith, Dave Gravina, Rosie Fisher, Adrian McGregor

Unfortunately it is running simultaneously with the Sydney Film Festival’s screening of Salt, the documentary recording Murray Fredericks’ annual trek across Lake Eyre. So, you know, I’m torn.

A quick update on projects currently on site at the moment. First up, the almost-so-very-close-but-not-quite-finished-yet Elizabeth Bay Apartment:

This is our first multi-room project (!) and involved removing a whole lot of walls, putting down a timber floor and inserting a newsnaking joinery unit containing storage, the kitchen and a study.

Also, the Watsons Bay house is taking shape. If only the weather would hold out for a couple of days so that they could get the roof on…

The newly announced Assassin’s Creed appears to be set in a faithfully recreated fifteenth century Venice. It is hard to believe that Venice has not yet been used in this type of open world game — it is the perfect city for this type of open world game: three dimensional, tight intricate maps, lots of opportunities for jumping around the place. GTA might not translate so well though…

P.E.A.R. the ‘Paper for Emerging Architectural Research’ is being launched on 15 June 2009 at The Building Centre, London. P.E.A.R. aims to re-establish the fanzine as a primary medium for the dissemination of architectural ideas, musings, research and works. Through its presentation of a wide range of architectural discourses, P.E.A.R. seeks to present the complexity and variety of contemporary architectural practices.
