The Hungry Mile

Wednesday, 6th August 2008

The NSW State Government is increasing commercial space and reducing residential space at the Hungry Mile site on the eastern fringe of Sydney’s CBD, leaving it a far less diverse urban environment that has a far greater load on the city’s transport system. The competition winning architects for the site — Hill Thallis, Paul Berkemeier and Jane Irwin have been shut out of proceedings for a while now, and have recently begun speaking out on the subject.

Mr Thalis yesterday estimated the extra office space would be worth about $100 million a year to the Government. He would welcome a decision to spend that extra money on improved public transport and a better, bigger park but “if you have to get through a sterile business park to get to a park that is alienated from the city, then that’s not the best outcome”.
